Facilitating the shared management of a common good

Villa Crastan is an ancient mansion that is part of the historical and architectural heritage of the city of Pontedera (Pisa) and that has been since long waiting for a reopening and a new life.

This urban common has become the heart of an articulated co-design and regeneration that we have designed and accompanied since 2016 with the Municipality of Pontedera and with the Regional Government of Tuscany.

Through citizens’ engagement activities, but above all by encouraging the testing of new collaborative uses of the Villa, we unleashed the potential of individuals and organizations to open up the space and create opportunities for the entire community.

The project facilitated the transfer and mainstreaming of collaborative practices and shared governance tools, allowing individuals and groups to crowdsource their skills and energies to create a collective entity – the Association Villa Crastan Casa della Città. In 2020, the organisation signed a specific collaborative agreement with the Municipality of Pontedera that entrust it with the management of the Villa and the organisation of cultural and social activities that open up the place to public use and create shared common value.

The project is a pilot and best practice at the regional level because of its ability to concretize the guidelines of #CollaboraToscana – the Regional Green Paper for collaborative practices in Tuscany.

“Viva Villa Crastan Viva” and “Villa Crastan Casa della Città” were projects promoted by the Municipality of Pontedera with the support of the Regional Authority for participation and by the Regional Government of Tuscany.
